As you can tell by now, self care is necessary for your emotional and physical well-being. In addition, it’s something that should be practiced regularly in order to be effective. That means there’s no need for your care routine to be elaborate, time-intensive or expensive. Some of the simplest activities can be quite renewing. Take a look at this list of self care options that won’t break the bank.
Claim Some Quiet Time with Your Favorite Drink
Whether it’s a warm beverage or something alcoholic, grabbing a drink and sitting down with your thoughts can be quite renewing and relaxing. You can simply sit in quiet meditation, if you’d like. Claiming some reading time or listening to music are other options. If you want to make it feel extra special, lighting a candle or incense for aromatherapy and ambience can be nice.
Indulge in a Sweet Treat
Sometimes some sweet comfort food is what we need to feel warm and loved. If you enjoy baking, you can incorporate the whole process of creating your own special treat into this self-care activity. Otherwise, store-bought sweets will do. Choosing a particularly decadent or favorite treat can enhance the experience and will make up for the extra calories.
Visit a Museum or Other Favorite Place
Sometimes getting out among people is what you need to renew. A trip to the museum can be great for this. It’s something most of us don’t do every day, so it might seem like a bit of indulgence. In addition, it adds culture to your life and doesn’t cost a ton of money. If the museum isn’t your thing, substitute it with another public place you’d enjoy. The park, an art gallery, a quiet cafe or a local historical site are all options to consider.
Create an At-Home Spa Day
Spas are expensive, but a DIY version at home can feel just as indulgent and rejuvenating. Do a foot soak, give yourself a manicure or soak in a floral bath. If you think it would be more fun, invite some friends over to give each other spa treatments. Add some champagne to the mix if you’d like to make things super fancy.
Get Out in Nature
Being outside among nature can be one of the most invigorating experiences for many of us. If the outdoors calls to you, feel free to choose your own routine to get back to nature and enjoy the scenery. Hiking is a good choice for those who like to walk in the woods. If you’re a fisherman, find a quiet spot to enjoy. Even a picnic in the park by a pond can do for those who don’t necessarily hear the call of the wild.

Self-Care on a budget doesn’t have to be the pits, finding a few things that you really enjoy (free or low-cost) is a wonderful way to save money and relax at the same time. Who knows with the money you save you can buy yourself a new pair of shoes!
Taking time away from the phone and computer are the easy things you can do to recharge your batteries. In fact, it should make you feel good knowing you can put those things away and not stress over incoming messages. Even if it’s just for a few hours, time away from your devices is important.
Allowing time for yourself shows you know how to set boundaries. When you create boundaries, it lessens the chance of you being taken advantage of or overworking yourself. When you can show others you care about your well-being they will have no choice but to abide by your wishes.

Guy Winch describes self-care as emotional hygiene. He states we should be “Taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies.”
