If you are a parent it’s no secret sometimes children can be a little hyper. We all become restless and it’s perfectly acceptable to take some time and get your ‘wiggles’ out if necessary. So what are the benefits of kids yoga? Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improve.
Yoga helps create awareness in the body through deep breathing and movement. It gives kids a way to express themselves, build a strong connection between what they hear and what they do. Children that have healthy body awareness are more confident and strong, have better posture, breathe better and have a sense of quiet strength.
My children began practicing yoga randomly last year after watching me. They had never been too interested in what I was doing, but they were always watching and on occasion mocking my moves. It never bothered me any, because they were exercising and didn’t even realize it!
After a while, they began asking if they could join me in my nightly routine. Nights turned into daytime stretches and now they are doing a set of 10 moves every morning when they wake up and at night before going to bed.
Teaching my children these relaxation techniques has not only improved temperament, but their posture has become significantly better and so has my eight years old’s ability to concentrate.
A2 (their nicknames) are also very competitive. We do yoga so they can participate in an activity that is non-competitive but still physical. It also encourages good self-esteem with body awareness without the need to compete against others.
A dedicated and intentional yoga practice that includes breathing techniques, behavioral guidelines, and physical postures can be incredibly valuable for children of all ages. Yoga is something children can practice anywhere and that the breathing, the concentration, the poses, and the way kids learn to act or react to situations, will lead to constant self-discovery and inquisitiveness.

Children these days have packed schedules and sometimes move at a frantic pace. If your family is anything like me, we are usually at someone’s practice or game or dance class any given day of the week. With a number of activities children participate in, combining that with more screen time than any other generation, our kids are experiencing an unprecedented amount of stress. Yoga teaches kids from a young age methods of self-help such as proper breathing, meditation, and healthy movement.
